For our 'Data Gathering' studio session we were give the UK riots location data. Within this source of data locations, damage, date and time were stated during the period of one week.

We were given time to analyse the data and in groups come up with the most appropriate visual concept for representing this data in a 'infographic', which we later presented in a short informal presentation.

However the only media that was given and allowed to used in this exercise was threads and pins.

To begin our design we had to choose what information we wanted to visually represent within our 'infograohic'

we decide illustrate the damage that occurred during the Uk riots show how they compare to each other.

After this we separated the damage locations into six categories:

- Restaurants
- Banks
- Retail Stores
- Supermarkets
- Authority
- Public

The idea was to show and compare which of these six categories were damaged the most.
One of my first idea was to represent the damages occured and their severity using circles and their size as an guide.

The concept was that the bigger the the circle around the category the higher the level of damage was suffered thus the smaller the circle the less damage was suffered.

Furthermore the diastase of the the outer circle carrying the specific location i.e. 'JD sports' from the 'general category i.e. 'Retail Stores' would illustrate a numeric value representing exactly how many of those places were damaged using a key at the bottom of the 'infographic'.
Within this 'infographic' idea i decided to adopt a stereotypically mathematical graph and adapting its numerical values to represent the severity of crime, also the use of colour was imbedded to visually illustrate the severity.

i.e.
- green = good
- red = bad

The graph was visually dissected into four section representing four different 'Baselines' of crime severity.

i.e.
- 1st 'Baseline' = Controlled crime
- 4th 'Baseline' = Uncontrolled crime
The final 'infographic' idea was the one we decided to use for our final presentation.

The concept of this idea lies within two 'infographics' in one representing the same information.

We placed the main cause of the UK riots in the middle with the biggest square and decided to illustrated the damage consequences as parts coming out, similar to a spider diagram.

The thought process we used in this piece of work was the same as our earlier work where we used measured lines to represent the numeric value of the places that were damaged thus the longer the line the higher the numeric value and vice versa.

However in the top left of the diagram we chose to tweak this mean of measuring and replaced the lines with other squares, the thinking structure was the same the bigger the square the higher numeric value of damages.

The reason for this was to give the audience two possibilities of reading and understanding the information we tried to transmit.

'INFOGRAPHIC'
This was our final piece that we presented at the end of the studio session.

Each category was colour coordinated and listed, also to represent the higher numeric value we decided to incorporate a new formula:

High numeric value = more thread around the pins (thicker lines)

IS AN
'INFOGRAPHIC'?
'Infographics' are used to comunicate and transmit information through clever and eye catching structure.

In this case this still image poster is sharing information about the "Gangnam Style' dace thats been haunting the web in the summer of 2013.

We can see how this 'infographic' uses pictures of 'Psy' (the author of the song/dance) combined with foot steps and arrow illustrations to emphasis the movements required for this dance.
Here we see how an 'infographic' doesn't necessarily have to be a still image but it can be made into a linear/ non linear narrative video.

In this video we see how every object that is dropped onto the jelly is tagged with its physical properties, this is done to make the audience aware of what kind of information this 'infographic' is communicating, in this case the power and innovation of 'Dynamic Breaking and Energy' for 'GE'.
